It is amazing to watch preschoolers learn how to categorize the world in new ways! One of those new categorizations is numbers and counting. My daughter loves to prepare my coffee for me in the morning using the Keurig. I tell her that I want three sugars. I let her take the packets out of the little green box and count them one by one - one sugar, two sugars, three sugars. Then she cuts off the tops (not so) neatly with the scissors and pours them into my cup. She loves doing this so much that three is never enough for her, she always wants to keep going! I tell her, no Mads, four is too many, it will be way too sweet, Mommy only wants three! Still, she persists. As soon as my son wakes up, he always goes for his most prized possessions: his Paw Patrol cars. His very favorite one is Rubble, who rides a bulldozer. He lines all three of his Rubbles up neatly in a row, counting them as meticulously as any two year old could, and then scatters them across the floor like bowling pins w

For all those parents teaching their children chemistry, here is a free printable periodic table of elements, complete with atomic weight, number, name and symbol.  As a great learning aid, check out the free printable periodic table of elements flash cards I created to help my kids memorize the chart.

The other day, my daughter came up behind me while I was cleaning out my purse and saw some spare change hiding at the bottom. "I need money!" she proclaimed loudly in her toddler voice! "For what?" I said, half proud that she recognized money has value, and half scared that she wanted it. "You don't just get money," I told her. "You have to earn it. Money isn't free!" I looked around our living room and got an idea. "We have ten minutes before we leave for Grandma's house. If you use these ten minutes and pick up all of your toys, I will give you some money." Her eyes lit up bright and soon both my son and daughter were scurrying around the living room, picking up toys and throwing them as fast as they could into the designated bins. At the end of the ten minutes, about half the toys were put away. I reached into my purse and pulled out two nickles. I put the nickel into my daughter's hands and said sternly, "Here

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and my kids and I are getting festive. As a homeschooling parent of two preschoolers, I'm teaching my kids about the holidays we celebrate and what they mean. I find that adding coloring pages into my routine helps me reinforce whatever lesson I'm trying to teach. Coloring is also a good way for young kids to develop dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
