FREE HOMESCHOOLING RESOURCE!!! Watermelon Seed Counting Game

It is amazing to watch preschoolers learn how to categorize the world in new ways! One of those new categorizations is numbers and counting. My daughter loves to prepare my coffee for me in the morning using the Keurig. I tell her that I want three sugars. I let her take the packets out of the little green box and count them one by one - one sugar, two sugars, three sugars. Then she cuts off the tops (not so) neatly with the scissors and pours them into my cup. She loves doing this so much that three is never enough for her, she always wants to keep going! I tell her, no Mads, four is too many, it will be way too sweet, Mommy only wants three! Still, she persists.

As soon as my son wakes up, he always goes for his most prized possessions: his Paw Patrol cars. His very favorite one is Rubble, who rides a bulldozer. He lines all three of his Rubbles up neatly in a row, counting them as meticulously as any two year old could, and then scatters them across the floor like bowling pins with another one of his many trucks.

Numbers are how we order the world, and counting is a skill worth practicing with even the youngest of preschoolers. In order to help practice counting in a fun way, I created the Watermelon Seed Counting Game for my kids. I made 10 Watermelon place cards with the numbers 1-10 on them. I then cut out the "seeds" and have them place the correct number of seeds on each card. Not only does it help them learn numbers, but it also helps develop fine motor skills. Total mom bonus!

TIP: I laminate the cards so I can reuse them. For the "seeds" I just print them out on computer paper and attempt to save them in a tin or envelope. If you lose them or your kids destroy them, you can always print off another sheet.
